Data Protection and Confidentiality

I am registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and process personal information in accordance with applicable data protection legislation.

Information collected during our work together may include contact details, emergency contact information, GP details, appointment records, correspondence, and brief therapy notes.

Your information will be stored securely and accessed only where necessary for the provision of counselling services, professional supervision, legal compliance, or safeguarding purposes.

Confidentiality is an important part of counselling. Information shared during counselling will not normally be disclosed to others without your consent.

Exceptions to confidentiality may arise where:

  • There is a serious risk of harm to yourself or another person.

  • There are safeguarding concerns involving a child or vulnerable adult.

  • Disclosure is required by law or court order.

  • Disclosure is necessary to prevent serious crime.

  • Professional or legal obligations require action.

As part of ethical practice, I engage in professional supervision (also bound by confidentiality). Client work may be discussed within supervision; identifying information is minimised wherever possible.

Client records and therapy notes are generally retained for seven years following the end of therapy, after which they are securely destroyed unless a longer retention period is required by law, insurance requirements, or ongoing legal proceedings.

Further information about how personal data is handled is available in the Privacy Policy available on my website.
